How to Care for Cut Flowers During Delhi's Monsoon Season

Published October 12, 2026

Delhi's monsoon is brutal on cut flowers — humidity, warm nights, and erratic AC use can wilt a bouquet in hours. Follow these expert tips to keep your delivered flowers fresh longer.

Why Delhi's Monsoon Is the Most Challenging Season for Cut Flowers

Between July and September, Delhi enters one of the most demanding climates in the world for fresh flowers. Average daytime temperatures hover at 32–36°C and humidity soars to 80–90%. Unlike the dry summer (where the challenge is dehydration), the monsoon introduces a different enemy: bacteria and mould growth. A bouquet that would last 8 days in October will last barely 4 days in August without proper care.

The First 30 Minutes Are Critical

  1. Unwrap immediately. Trapped moisture around the stems accelerates bacterial growth. Remove all cellophane or paper and let the bouquet breathe.
  2. Fill a clean vase with room-temperature water. Do not use chilled water — the sudden temperature shock stresses the stems.
  3. Add the entire flower food packet. The sachet contains sugar (food), biocide (bacteria killer), and citric acid (pH adjuster). In monsoon conditions, the biocide component is more important than ever.
  4. Trim the stems at a 45-degree angle. Using sharp scissors, cut 2–3 cm off each stem. The angled cut creates more surface area and prevents the stem sealing against the vase bottom.
  5. Remove all submerged foliage. Submerged leaves rot within 24–48 hours in warm water, turning the vase into a bacterial incubator.

Ongoing Care Day-by-Day

Days 1–3

Place the vase away from direct sunlight and away from AC vents. The cold blast desiccates petals rapidly. Keep flowers in a shaded, moderately cool area (18–24°C).

Days 3–5: The Critical Water Change

Completely empty the vase, wash with dish soap, rinse thoroughly, and refill with fresh water. Add flower food or a homemade substitute (1 teaspoon white vinegar + 1 tablespoon sugar per litre). Re-cut all stems by 1 cm before placing back.

Flower-Specific Monsoon Tips

Roses

Roses are most susceptible to "bent neck" in high humidity. Cure: completely submerge the entire rose in a bucket of water for 30 minutes, re-cut the stem under water, and immediately place it back in the vase.

Orchids

Orchids actually thrive in humid conditions — closer to their natural tropical environment. Mist the roots lightly with water every day. Orchids can last 3–6 weeks with proper care, making them the best monsoon flower investment.

Gerberas and Carnations

Use a shallow vase for gerberas — stems deeper than 5 cm tend to rot faster in warm conditions. Change water daily for both types during monsoon months.

Questions

How long do delivered flowers last during Delhi's monsoon?

With proper care — fresh water, flower food, daily stem trimming, correct placement — most flowers last 4–7 days during Delhi's monsoon. Orchids can last 3–6 weeks.

Should I refrigerate flowers during Delhi's monsoon?

Domestic refrigerators are not ideal — too cold and often too dry. If you must store temporarily, wrap loosely and place in the vegetable drawer for a maximum of 2–3 hours.

Why do my flowers smell bad after two days?

Bad smell indicates bacterial growth in the vase water. Empty the vase, wash with soap, remove submerged leaves, re-cut stems, and refill with fresh water and flower food.

Can I order flowers during heavy rain in Delhi?

Yes. Instant Bouquet partner florists continue deliveries during rain. Heavy flooding may occasionally cause delays, but deliveries continue whenever roads are passable.

Which flowers should I avoid ordering in Delhi's monsoon?

Delicate imported flowers like lisianthus, sweet peas, and anemones struggle most. Stick to roses, carnations, lilies, orchids, and chrysanthemums for best results.
